Why are Shiba Inus considered catlike?

As a Shiba Inu owner, you constantly hear “cat-like” to describe the personality of Shiba Inus.  I’ve even heard a national dog show commentator say that Shibas are cat-like or people have told me that I need to get a real dog and not a cat-dog. Although I think this description is sometimes used as a slam against the breed, it’s what makes this breed totally unique and very endearing to me.

What exactly make Shiba Inu cat-like?

The list is longer than you think.  Not all Shibas display all these traits but here are the typically observed, quirky catlike behaviors that give them the reputation:

1. They are independent and can appear aloof.

They’ll explore the world with or without you and will come to you only when they are ready.  This trait makes them runners and off-the-leash walking not possible for many Shibas.  Unlike cats, I don’t think Shibas have a good internal homing device to find their way back home so this also causes loose Shibas to get completely lost.  Make sure that your Shiba is microchipped.

2. They are fastidious about their appearance.

You’ll see them constantly cleaning themselves – licking their paws, their coat, washing their face, etc.  My female Shiba especially was so finicky about getting her paws wet that she used to walk around puddles.

3. They are considered hard to train.

For both cats and Shibas, I don’t think this statement is 100% accurate.  They are smart and fast learners.  It’s just that they choose not to listen to you most of the time.

4. They sit on a higher ground and survey their domain

Top of the back of the couch is their usual hang out spot.  They are so agile and small like a cat so they can easily get up there and lay down to hang out.  They’ll jump up on other furniture, too (like the dining table if accessible) so make sure that your house is Shiba-proofed.

You’ll find them randomly sitting on things like this that give them a better vantage point.

5. They have a don’t-give-a-sh*t attitude.

This is also called ‘Shibatude’ in the Shiba owners’ world.  They do want they want. Period.

6. They rub up against you – like a cat!

My female Shiba never did this but my boy totally would rub up against some people’s legs to greet them when he is super excited to see you.  I’ll also post a video of this as soon as I can capture it but my male Shiba would rub himself on my husband’s shoes or pillows like they are made of catnip. It’s a total gesture of affection.

7. They look like they are constantly judging you.

You probably have seen cats do this but you’ll catch your Shiba staring at you with their eyes half closed which gives them that judgy look.  It feels like they are expressing part amusement, part disappointment.

Yes, Shiba Inus are not like any other dogs.  But the variety is spice of life that keep this world an interesting place.  My life has definitely been more fun and interesting with a Shiba in it!

I have two female Shiba inus and yes they have a very bad attitude sometimes. Olive (my girl Shiba) will bite my hand gently and then give me the most aggressive eyes I’ve ever seen. Especially when I’m trying to study. But they’re totally worth it for their attitude sometimes. I think they’re the sassiest dog breed!🐕
