Knowing what you know and if your heart is set on getting a Shiba Inu, rescuing a dog that’s already been house-trained and their personalities assessed may be a great option for you as you start your search. There are great dogs out there that the owners are no longer able to take care of, or dogs that just need the second chance by the right type of the owner.
Below is the fairly comprehensive list of reputable Shiba Inu rescue organizations in the U.S. to get you started. Check out each organization’s policies on the areas they serve and their application process. We’ll keep updating this list as we validate their status.
There are many reputable rescue organizations other than what’s listed below. Most rescue organizations do not specialize in one specific breed but may have a Shiba Inu or a Shiba mix available at any given time. But watch out for rescue organizations that do not have the best of intentions. Just because they name themselves a “rescue” and have filed to be non-profit organizations, it doesn’t mean that they are all legitimate rescue organizations with a benevolent intent.
Unfortunately, there are organizations and individuals that establish themselves as a rescue or claim to be affiliated with rescue organizations and collect money or pull dogs from shelters to resell them for personal gain and profit. That act, in of itself, isn’t necessarily a horrible thing. But it could be a sign that they are also treating these dogs purely as products. They might not care about helping to assess any of their medical or behavioral problems before they are adopted. Or are not concerned about the situation that these dogs will be placed in with the new owner.
Do your research before you engage with any of the rescue organizations. Check out their Facebook page for any reviews. Check with local shelters to see if they worked with the organization before. Or contact one of the organizations below near you to see if they have heard of the rescue organization in question.
